Our Commitment

Education is clearly a shared responsibility and we aim to work in partnership with parents and other professionals.

Salvatorian College is a mainstream Catholic secondary school. We are proud to be a fully comprehensive and non-selective school, welcoming pupils from a wide range of primary schools.

A child or young person is considered to have Special Educational Needs (SEN) if they have a learning difficulty or disability that requires special educational provision to be made. This applies where a child or young person:

(a) has significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age; or
(b) has a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or post-16 institutions.

Where a pupil is identified as having SEN, Salvatorian College will provide support that is additional to or different from the differentiated curriculum, in line with the SEN Code of Practice (2014). This provision is designed to remove barriers to learning and will be delivered within the limits of available resources, using both mainstream school funding and SEN top-up funding as appropriate.

How we support pupils with special educational needs

Salvatorian College endeavours to visit feeder primary schools to support a smooth transition for incoming pupils. Where appropriate, transition support is put in place for those previously identified as having Special Educational Needs. Prior to admission, information is reviewed to help identify SEN; however, assessment and monitoring of SEN is regular and ongoing for all pupils.

Once admitted to Salvatorian College, pupils with the most severe or complex needs are prioritised for support. Parents of pupils within this category are invited to bespoke consultation, planning, and review meetings. Support is tailored to the four broad areas of need outlined in the SEN Code of Practice (2014):

  • Communication and interaction

  • Cognition and learning

  • Social, emotional and mental health

  • Sensory and/or physical needs

The views and wishes of the child are always taken into consideration. The SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), a qualified specialist teacher, is available to provide support and guidance. A number of staff work closely with pupils identified as having SEN or disabilities, and the school also makes use of external professionals, including educational psychologists, where appropriate.

All teaching staff receive basic training in Special Educational Needs. Ongoing professional development is provided for teachers and Teaching Assistants as needs arise, alongside opportunities for staff to further develop their expertise.

Salvatorian College aims to facilitate full access to both the curriculum and meta-curriculum wherever possible, ensuring that pupils with SEN or disabilities are not treated less favourably than their peers. In addition to academic progress, the school gives careful consideration to pupils’ social and emotional development.

Pupils are placed into ability streams, and setting is used where appropriate to ensure teaching is pitched at the correct level. Progress for pupils with SEN is assessed by benchmarking against expected progress from Key Stage 2 prior attainment. Progress grades are issued termly, and parents are encouraged to contact the Head of Year or SENCO if they wish to discuss any concerns.

The school uses the recommended graduated approach of assess, plan, do, and review, adapting support as required and involving external expertise when appropriate.

Most pupils with SEN are supported within the classroom environment. Occasionally, some pupils may be withdrawn for specific interventions. Pupils with more significant learning needs may be placed in smaller teaching groups in Year 7 while following a curriculum closely aligned with the National Curriculum. In exceptional cases, a small number of pupils may follow a more personalised curriculum designed to meet their individual needs, interests, and abilities. A dedicated SEN homework club runs every evening from Monday to Friday, and pastoral support is provided through a dedicated Head of Year.

Annual Reviews are held for pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). These reviews focus on achievements, progress towards outcomes, levels of support, and future planning, and involve parents/carers, the pupil, and any relevant external agencies.
