Mathematics

Subjects Overall Aim

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and nearly all forms of employment. At Salvatorian College we aim to provide a mathematics education that allows students a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

KS3 Curriculum (Year 7+8)

Students in Year 7 and Year 8 develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They develop their skills in Number, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Geometry and Measures, Probability and Statistics, in preparation for skills taught at GCSE.

KS4 Curriculum (Year 9-11)

The New GCSE (9-1) is designed to challenge students to use mathematical skills to solve problems and develop reasoning. Throughout KS4 students will:

AO1: Applying Standard Techniques - Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, developing a conceptual understanding of the subject and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

  • AO2: Reasoning, Interpreting, Communicating - Learn to follow a line of enquiry, conjecture relationships and generalisations, and develop an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • AO3: Solving Non-routine Problems in Contexts - Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Students will build on learning from key stage 3 to further develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should be able to apply their mathematical knowledge wherever relevant in other subjects and in financial contexts.
